Phenotypic and Genetic Relations Between Initial Response to Electric Shock and Rate of Avoidance Learning in Mice By: Douglas Wahlsten Wahlsten, D. Phenotypic and genetic relations between initial response to electric shock and rate of avoidance

چکیده

The first experiment was designed to determine what proportion of the between-strain variation in rate of avoidance learning could be attributed to strain differences in sensitivity and response topography to electric shock. Measures of jumping at six shock intensities for four inbred strains were collected in a pretest of shock sensitivity. They were then used to derive a shock intensity for each strain which yielded the same amount of jumping for all strains. Avoidance training was administered to other mice of the same age and strains using the same apparatus and shock source as in the pretest. When training was given with a 180 pa shock, significant strain differences were observed in latency of the first escape and total errors to a learning criterion during both jump-out and one-way avoidance training. A large strain by training procedure interaction was found, as well. When training was administered with shock levels which yielded equal jumping in the pretest, strain differences in latency of the first escape were totally eliminated. However, the magnitude of strain differences in the rate of avoidance learning was not changed substantially. A second experiment examined two F1 hybrid strains and a four-way cross of the inbred strains tested in the first experiment. Results indicated that initial response to shock is characterized by intermediate inheritance, while rate of avoidance learning exhibits significant dominant inheritance. Although significant genetic differences in both initial response to shock and rate of avoidance learning were detected in the present experiments, it is concluded that the former cannot account for the latter.

Caffeine, dose dependently can reinforce or deteriorate learning. In previous studies, the effect of glucose on decreasing of amnesia was investigated. In this study, the effect of caffeine on three phases of learning and also probable interference of glucose in mice were examined by using of passive avoidance learning .Male albino mice were examined as follows: 1. test group: a) this group rec...

Background and purpose: Follicular atresia is a natural phenomenon throughout growth and development, but in excessive cases it causes disorders in the ovarian function which is the commonest cause of infertility. Outbreak of depression in women is twice as much as men. Electric-shock therapy could be used in the treatment of depression resistant to drugs. However, it has some side-effects. T...

Shock-induced activity changes, adrenal lipid depletion and brain weight in mice: a genetic study.

Motor activity was evaluated before and after a brief electric shock. Whereas small genetic differences in activity were apparent prior to shock, large group differences occurred following shock. C57 mice did not freeze following a shock; DBA mice showed prolonged freezing; and the F1 hybrids froze only briefly. Backcross groups revealed segregation for postshock activity. Adrenal lipid depleti...

Impact of Exchange Rate Shock on Prices of Imports and Exports

This study examines the significant impact of exchange rate shock on prices of Malaysian importsand exports. In methodology, the study adopts vector error correction (VECM) model using monthlydata of nominal exchange rates, money supply, prices of imports and prices of exports covering theperiod of M1:1999 to M12:2006. For further analysis, we adopt an innovation accounting bysimulating varianc...
